Youth Art Exchange exists to make sure that San Francisco public high school students have this critical access to the arts. Our mission is to spark a shared creative practice between professional artists and public high school students, furthering youth as leaders, thinkers, and artists in San Francisco. We offer free, multidisciplinary arts programs after school, in school, and during the summer.

Our vision is that every public high school student in San Francisco will have access to meaningful, in-depth arts education that amplifies their voices.

Music/Audio Production

In Music/Audio Production, students work with professional Digital Audio Work Station (DAW) Ableton Live software and professional audio production equipment to make their own music, create beats, record and release projects on digital streaming platforms.

Student harness the power of the internet and internet-based free music software to deepen their understanding of scales, chords and chord progressions to create a more professional sound in their creations.

Our studio also looks at the power of immigrants and their influence on American Popular Music’s and Cultures such as Hip-Hop and one of its most influential creators and trend setters, Jamaican Immigrant and New York resident DJ Kool Herc (Hecules).

In closing we ask the students to explore sound delivery platforms and their effect on the way we hear, receive and the quality of music.

My name is Alex but my artist name is Alex415. I am 14 years old and I enjoy making music. Growing up, music was a major role in my life because I heard everywhere. Whether it was rancheros or Hip Hop and R&B, I always enjoyed listening to it. My favorite artists right now are J DIlla, Tyler, The Creator, Joji and 100 Gecs. The type of music I make is lo-fi, hip-hop and chillwave/vaporwave. Follow me on instagram @alex415_music and on YouTube at Alex415. Thank you and have a great day :)

Anibal G.

16 years old, Academy High School

This song was kinda supposed to be fast track with guitars riffs and the inspiration came from a band called bring me the horizon

Something I learned was basically everything and how to make Music and to edit the tracks and the commands and how to position each track.

Annie T.

My name is Annie Tan, and my age is 17. This is my first year with YAX and the first year in the Music Production class. Something I learned in this class was how to create and remix songs on Ableton. This track is a remix of the song Lemon by Kenshi Yonezu. The inspiration came from the melody of the song because I think it is very calming. I also heard a version of this song in Chinese before, so the melody became very familiar to me. My goal in this class is to create or remix more songs on Ableton. I am also interested in learning more techniques in music production.

Jieying L

Age: 18

Inspiration: my friend recommended me this song to listen to when I asked for song recommendations. when we were introduced to this music project, I thought of this song first because the rhythm was really good and the beats don't look hard.

I enjoyed playing around with the beats and adding different drums to the songs. I learned how to use chordify and piano sheet to transfer the song into Ableton. It was an excellent experience and I enjoyed it a lot.

Yi Z.

Hi, my name is Yi. This is my first time creating my own track, I'm not satisfied with this track at all, because it's not the same as what I want to get. Although it is not completely different, it is still quite different from what I imagined or wish to be. That's why I'm at Youth Art Exchange, so I can learn how to compose music, and how to use Ableton to create the music that I want.

The track begins and ends with a heart beating sound. The whole track sounds very calm, with no ups and downs. Because I want a track to express my life or show how my life is every day. Sometimes I do feel happy and sad, but it is normal(calm) noting special, just like this track. And human life starts with the heart beating and ends with the heart stops beating, also, just like this track. Of course, as I said at the beginning, this is my idea of what I want this track to be. My track does have these things but they are not perfect. Thank you.

Chris H.

Hi, I am Chris, I go to Gateway highschool and am in the ninth grade. I am also 14 years old.In my tracks, Beats, my inspiration is how the drums or the beats rarely get the spotlight so I made a track dedicated to it.I like taking sounds and turning them into something I would like to listen to. The track, Beats, gets started with me taking a beat that I like and turning it into something cohesive. The thing about the YAX music program is that I get all the creative liberties and YAX helps me take those ideas something physical. I like how they teach us how to use a program and not how to make a specific song.
